The Problem.

HEALTH ISSUES

The Sustainable Development Goal target on clean water and sanitation remains the most off-track of all the goals. The reason is the silence surrounding the sanitation crisis. A clean and safe toilet ensures health, dignity and well-being yet 40% of the world’s populations do not have access to adequate sanitation facilities (WTO). Sanitation is therefore a critical issue to address, since it also serves as a crucial barrier to disease transmission.

In Barangay Biayon, Municipality of Sergio OsmeñaSr, Zamboanga del Norte Province, during the house-to-house survey conducted on October 2015, about 84% of the households owned water-sealed toilet, 9% have no toilet of their own, 5% of households surveyed have the unsanitary antipolo type, and 1% have the flush type toilet facility. On October 2016, during the repeat house-to-house survey conducted, 15% (44) of households have no sanitary toilets at all.

Toilet sanitation and excreta disposal could be difficult topics for a community to discourse. It could be offensive, or people may not like to discuss issues they regard as personal and unclean. But the fact that they perceived and voted it as one of their top problems in the community, made it easy to interact with them and provide them with information and solution regarding health issues on poor toilet sanitation.

The Solution.

  • Oplan Pansayan House-to-House Survey

  • Oplan Pansayan Health Education Campaign
