Since the adoption of the Letter of Instruction 949 signed by President Marcos on 1979, primary health care became the triggering convergence towards unity for health. Despite the appeal of “Health in the Hands of the People by 2020” from the Alma Ata Declaration, still remains the lack of proactive contributions to the needs of the society. With such complex issues of health unity, the Ateneo de Zamboanga University-School of Medicine (ADZU-SOM) has conceptualized a competency-based and community oriented medical curriculum, responsive to variable arrays of health care development and specific to the needs of the communities. With the 20 years of existence of the ADZU-SOM, it has brought about community empowerment through active participation among communities, health professionals, health managers and policy makers towards the fulfilment of the formidable goal of unity for health.

With the continuous efforts of the ADZU-SOM on sending medical students to underprivileged communities, a group has been assigned to Barangay Biayon, Sergio Osmeña, Zamboanga del Norte Province. This group, consisting of 8 medical students, have been plunged into an area away from the comforts of the home. It is during the community experience that the students realize that the practice of medicine should not only be concerned with the bio-medical model of curing diseases but also of the bio-social model perceiving the multidimensional nature of health that includes political, socio-economic, environment, behaviour, heredity and health care delivery system which are equally significant factors to effectively promote health and prevent illness. The group, therefore, aimed to enable the people of the community to steer the processes for managing their health development, specifically making decisions on what activities, projects and programs to undertake and how to carry them out to achieve community health, to attain health in the hands of the people.
