FOOD ALWAYS IN THE HOME (FAITH) BACKYARD GARDENING CAMPIGN

In coordination with the Provincial Agriculturist Office, vegetables seeds were procured intended for a total of three-hundred (300) households last October 2016. The seeds were packed in threes – three different types of vegetables per household. Each set contains one small pack of string beans (sitaw) seeds, one small pack of lady’s fingers (okra) seeds, and a small pack of water spinach (kangkong) seeds.

A lecture on “Backyard Gardening” was conducted by Mr. Alrey E. Empeynado, an Agricultural Technologist and the High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP) Municipal Coordinator from the Municipal Agriculture Office. The vegetables seeds were distributed after the lecture.

The Malnutrition Treatment Hub is a community-based malnutrition management scheme facilitated by the Barangay Nutrition Scholar and IYCF Support Group. The Malnutrition Treatment Hub consists of 5 phases. First, the assessment phase entails a comprehensive height and weight assessment to be accomplished by the Barangay Nutrition Scholar in partnership with the IYCF Support Group. For the second phase, once the malnourished children have been identified, they are referred to the municipal health officer for proper evaluation of the child’s health status. After evaluation from the physician, the mothers and primary caregivers of the identified malnourished children will undergo intensive counseling sessions with the IYCF Support Group during the third phase and may proceed with the fourth phase which includes providing the physician-prescribed feeding depending on age, breastfeeding status and nutritional status. The child may be prescribed with an “Indigenous Supplementary Mixture (INSUMIX) Feeding” for daily consumption or “Monggo, Milk and Egg Feeding” wherein boiled monggo will be fed thrice a week while the milk and boiled egg will be fed daily. The mother or primary caregiver must accompany his or her child to the purok station for feeding three times a week. For those days without scheduled feeding, the mother or primary caregiver will be given one day supply of milk and egg or INSUMIX.

INDIGENOUS SUPPLEMENTARY MIXTURE (INSUMIX)

July 2016 - March 2017

INSUMIX (Infant Supplementary Food Mix aka Indigenous Supplementary Mix) is a mixture of indigenous foods such as rice, monggo or beans, dilis or shrimp, oil and sugar.  It can be made in a variety of forms mixing the nutritious available foods. The INSUMIX used in Barangay Biayon is a mixture of corn flour, carrot, squash, monggo and sesame seeds.

The Department of Science and Technology agreed to expand the INSUMIX production of the municipality as they began training representatives from the IYCF Support Group. Currently, there has been an ongoing coordination between the Municipal Health Office and the Department of Science and Technology regarding the procurement of supplies and equipment needed to scale-up the INSUMIX production. In order to attain a continuous local supply of the raw materials for INSUMIX production, INSUMIX communal gardens were created.
